Characteristics of
UPM Conifer pine and spruce pulp

Bright and clean UPM Conifer is our main bleached softwood kraft pulp (NBSK) grade. With fibres that are long and slender, UPM Conifer works well in various end uses that require strength. This softwood pulp has notably fast development of tensile strength during refining.

UPM Conifer is made from both juvenile and mature wood. Roundwood and sawmill chips are utilised in its production. Fibre length can be controlled by adjusting saw-mill chip content.

Suitable for various end products, such as:

  • Tissue: toilet, towel, facial
  • Board: folding boxboard
  • Specialty papers: labels, filter
  • Printing & writing: copy, magazine

Characteristics of
UPM Conifer Thin pine and spruce pulp

UPM Conifer Thin is our special bleached softwood kraft pulp (NBSK) grade. It has a high fibre count that provides a smooth surface and good formation characteristics. UPM Conifer Thin has fast development of tensile strength and internal bond strength. It is easily refined, as it responds well to low refining intensity.

UPM Conifer Thin is particularly well suited for customers with limited refining capacity and/or co-refining applications together with hardwood pulp.

This pulp is produced from the first thinning wood of pine and spruce that has flexible thin-walled fibres. No saw-mill chips are utilised in its production.

Suitable for various end products, such as:

  • Tissue: toilet, towel facial
  • Specialty papers: dense papers with moderate requirement for tear strength
  • Certain release papers
  • Baking papers
  • Silicone-free requirements
  • Special interleaving papers (in contact with glass)

UPM Conifer is produced in three efficient pulp mills in Finland

UPM Conifer is produced in our three efficient pulp mills in Finland. UPM Kaukas in Lappeenranta, UPM Kymi in Kouvola and UPM Pietarsaari. Their combined annual production capacity is 2.37 million tonnes of softwood and birch pulp. Our pulp production is based on the EU’s ‘Best Available Techniques’ (‘BAT’) approach, and the philosophy to create more with less raw materials, water, energy and environmental impact.

The supply security and smooth functioning of UPM’s pulp mills is ensured by making regular, significant investments into the continuous improvement of operations. The mills are shut down, in turn, for maintenance approximately every 18 months to two years. During shutdowns, besides regular maintenance and repairs, improvements are made to the mills’ environmental and production efficiency.

UPM is committed to developing its operations towards a low carbon energy economy, in which UPM’s pulp mills play a key role. Highly energy efficient pulp mills produce renewable electricity, mostly from renewable biomass, in excess of their own needs.
