Achieve excellent strength with our bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP). It is made from slow-growing pine and spruce tempered by the demanding Nordic environment.

Northern softwood has been the backbone of our business for over 100 years. Take full advantage of our expertise and have your application just the way you want it.

Bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) products

We produce bleached softwood kraft pulp from northern pine and spruce. Our two softwood pulp grades are UPM Conifer and UPM Conifer Thin.

UPM Conifer

Bright and clean UPM Conifer is our main BSKP grade. With fibres that are long and slender, UPM Conifer is great in various end uses that require strength. This softwood pulp has notably fast development of tensile strength during refining.

Use UPM Conifer especially for:

  • Magazine and fine papers
  • Speciality papers
  • Tissue papers

UPM Conifer Thin

UPM Conifer Thin’s exceptionally high fibre count provides a smooth surface and good formation characteristics. It has fast development of tensile strength and internal strength. This pulp is produced from the first thinning wood of pine and spruce that has flexible thin-walled fibres.

Use it especially for:

  • Specialty papers
  • Tissue papers

What is northern bleached softwood kraft pulp?

Trees can be divided into softwoods and hardwoods. Softwood pulp is made of trees such as conifers like Pine (Pinus Silvestris) and Spruce (Picea Abies). Softwood pulp that comes from northern countries like Finland, Sweden and Canada can be considered as northern softwood pulp. Our softwood pulp is produced in our Finnish mills in Kymi, Kaukas and Pietarsaari.

Our softwood pulp mills are located in Finland

We produce softwood pulp in three mills: Kymi, Kaukas and Pietarsaari. UPM Conifer grade is produced in all three mills, whereas UPM Conifer Thin we produce only at the Pietarsaari mill.

What end-products is softwood pulp best for?

Softwood pulp fibres are longer than hardwood pulp fibres. The length and slenderness of the fibres provides strength and durability. Softwood pulp is suitable for various end products, such as tissue, board, specialty papers and printing and writing papers.
